墨想水白 th ink ing of Shui

If

There is no water, will Ink’s five colors still exist?
If there is no Ink, where will the voided space of water be ?

If

There is no Light
Then all is still in Chaos

A 67-meter long scroll painting with two ends hanging down from opposite walls is installed facing each other. One side of the scroll is almost black with calligraphic ink writing while the other side is left blank as the original colour of the paper. I repeatedly add water to dark ink for six times to achieve the overall gradation of ink colours on paper, then write 6 times the first two chapters of Ecclesiastes 傳道書

Two black lacquer bowls fill with water with brushes on the side place where the hanging scroll touch the ground. Two strong spot light hang at an angle from the ceiling focusing onto the water. The painting is fold in the middle randomly to create the feeling of the undulating mountain ranges from nature. Audiences are encouraged to write on the water and had an intimate dialogue with the scroll through the flickering light appeared on the scroll.
This scroll should hang lengthwise in a U-shape and form a folded hill-scape at the center. The room should have a quiet ambient atmosphere with sound of running water.

Visitors can quietly write on water (either with their finger or brush) give a moment of thoughts and meditate on the movement of the water, then he or she can look up into the hanging scroll in front of them for resonance. They can either do it facing the untouched empty scroll or the other end stained and blackened by continuous writing.

The blacken end will not give out any flickering light reflection and totally absorb all, while the ‘pure ’untouched end will echo all the brush or hand writing movement in dancing light.
